The Associate General Counsel reports to the Vice President, Managing Director Legal Services and is responsible for assisting with the legal and contracting functions of Carilion. Legal Services provides comprehensive legal advice and support concerning all aspects of health care services provided at Carilion facilities. Specific responsibilities include:
*Reviewing, drafting and negotiating a broad spectrum of healthcare contracts to include areas such as purchasing (supply chain and materials management), real estate, employment and outside staffing;
*Reviewing and analyzing arrangements between hospitals and other parties on compliance for Stark, Anti-Kickback Statute, and other fraud and abuse laws, EMTALA, HIPAA, antitrust laws, and any other regulatory requirements applicable to such arrangements;
*Assisting with the development of contractual models as well as policies and procedures;
*Conducting legal research, as necessary;
*Willing to develop new areas of sub-specialty as needs may arise;
*Working effectively with minimal supervision and with management and other members of the Department (6 attorneys and 1 administrative/executive assistant) as well as in conjunction with outside counsel.
Education: Doctor of Jurisprudence degree required.
Experience: Three to five years of related experience as practicing attorney with a working knowledge of multiple facets of health law. Minimum of two (2) years of experience within a large law firm, corporate or health care law department.
Licensure/certification: License to practice as attorney by the Commonwealth of Virginia via a Virginia license or in-house counsel designation.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be a self-starter with an attention to detail who meets deadlines with changing priorities and who has excellent judgment and decision-making skills. The ideal candidate will be an attorney with 4+ years of experience in hospital operations law practice and working knowledge of federal and state healthcare regulations and accreditation standards who seeks the opportunity to work on sophisticated health law matters in an in-house environment located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
